About a year ago I decided I really needed to lose some weight. Slowly, but surely, I did. And now, I need new pants.  Weight comparisons inside.

also, random stuff.

When I started, I weighed in at 168.  I'm 5'6", so that's overweight, though not terribly.  I didn't feel very attractive, and I didn't like the way my clothes fit.  So, I started lifting weights, working out a bit, watching what I ate a bit, and by the end of my 8 week program at the gym I'd lost a whopping two pounds.   I did lose a couple inches off my waist, so I felt okay about it, but it was still discouraging, especially when I looked at how much a friend had lost in that time period (she found out a couple weeks later that she was pregnant, so that explains a lot).  I know, muscle weighs more than fat, so I'd actually lost a fair amount, but it still didn't feel like I was making progress.

Even after I stopped going to the gym (long story, mostly just couldn't afford it, but also had a house to work on) I tried to be conscious of what I was eating. took the stairs instead of the elevator at work. just little things like that that weren't a huge change but would add up later. and slowly, the weight started coming off.

i attribute a lot of it to the fact that my new home has stairs. also to the fact that my metabolism finally caught up with my change in jobs (went from standing and moving all day to sitting all day).  I'm happy that it took this long to lose, in a way, because I know that slower weight loss is easier to maintain, and it's more likely to stay off.  but today, I weigh 146.  I haven't weighed this little since my first or second year of college.

So i'm pleased about that.  lets just hope i can keep it off with all the recent life stresses. I don't even want to talk about work.  also, i'm sure that now that i've finally reached something of a goal weight, i'll get pregnant and blow it all to hell.  that'd be okay, though.

also, pie. i made a berry pie from berries i had in the freezer.  the raspberries and strawberries are from my parents' garden.  the blackberries are not, but there's not that many of those in the pie. It looked like it might be a little sloppy so we'll see what happens. if nothing else, ice cream.  I like knowing what's in my food. my pie has no high-fructose corn syrup, no preservatives...it's berries, sugar, cinnamon, flour, butter. made my own crust (flour, salt, shortening, water). berries were home grown, no pesticides, no fertilizers (other than what comes out of the livestock...). speaking of livestock, those are also delicious. nom. If they keep doing this, i'm going to need a bigger freezer.

what else...um...bought myself some tasty beverages. I got a 6-pack of Woodchuck Amber, a hard cider type thing. I've just started drinking these, after having one at a local bar that had it on tap. I know tap is usually better than bottle, but I don't really enjoy going to bars that much, so this will have to do.

anyhoo...time to eat my pie.

I like to get the variety pack case.  Sadly the local place has been out.  They have an awesome raspberry.  the dark and dry is good too.  hell they're all good.

weight lifting by aphrael (4.00 / 1) #2 Sun Nov 23, 2008 at 01:08:29 AM EST
it's very very difficult to lose weight while weight lifting.

but converting it from fat to muscle and moving it around are both good things in and of themselves.

weight lifting was an essential component to my losing weight - otherwise I just lost muscle and kept the fat. But, yeah, there's something brutal in trying to lose weight and lifting.

...that she's female, so that makes the physiology slightly different, since she would gain less muscle mass than a male while seriously training.

there's lifting weights, and weight lifting.

One is for fitness and usually burns calories like a <something>, the other is an olympic sport.

You eat that pie, woman! by atreides (2.00 / 0) #3 Sun Nov 23, 2008 at 03:32:06 AM EST
You eat it and enjoy it. You've earned it.

After the move, I'm going to be hitting up Craig's List for a weight bench now that we'll have a place to put one...

i hate pants shopping.  i cannot find any for people with wide hips but a small waist. I always have gappy-butt in any pants i find that fit everywhere else.

i shall teach you to make good pie.  it's not the filling that is hard, it's the crust. even if you have to buy crust it's not a total failure. only after you master filling shall you learn crust, grasshopper. you shall become well versed in pie-foo.

impressive weight loss! by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #5 Sun Nov 23, 2008 at 11:51:45 AM EST
my "ideal" weight (in my mind) is 145-150 lbs.  however, i know i'm not willing to do the work it takes for me to get there.

i'm trying to get back down to 155-160 (starting point 170).  my goal is 5lbs/mo.  it should more realistically be 5 lbs/2 months.  anyway, last time i weighed a few weeks ago i was 162, so i'm getting there.

it helps by LilFlightTest (2.00 / 0) #6 Sun Nov 23, 2008 at 03:07:56 PM EST
that even though i'm sitting most of my work day, i am constantly in motion. i'm also too busy to have any time to snack. what shocks me the most about this whole thing is that after the initial two months at the gym, I haven't actually "worked out". I have been working on the house, carrying, painting, etc, so it's still physical activity. we're trying to eat at home more, eat out less.

i will no longer fit into my wedding dress properly....because it's too big.

they don't seem any smaller, either. I was hoping to get back down to a bra size that department stores carry...no such luck.

Good deal by barooo (2.00 / 0) #12 Mon Nov 24, 2008 at 10:26:59 AM EST
on the weightloss.  That is pretty damn good progress and at a sustainable rate.

I'm not keeping serious track of my weight really  because I don't own a scale.  not sure where I started on oct 1 when I started this attempt at self improvement, but according to the scale in the gym right now I'm at 206.

Results-wise, I can tell.  It's been about 6 weeks since I started seriously.  My pants fit better, but i haven't dropped a whole size yet.  But the uncomfortable pants I used to have are now almost too loose, and I bought a new pair of levis 501 in 36x34, I haven't been able to wear size 36 levi's in a while, and when I started this I was dangerously close to wearing a size 38 for the first time since 1997 (I went from a 44 in early 1997, to a 34 in early 1998, and a short lived 32 in 2001 when I ran my first marathon).  My shoulders and chest look and feel completely different than a few months ago, and my stomach feels less flabby.

I would still like to drop some serious pounds, but as everyone says, if you're lifting semi-seriously for a man it's awfully hard to lose weight at first, for the first 2-3 months you put on more muscle than you lose fat.  But I'm fine with that, a muscular 185-190 is my target.  I also need to stop slacking on cardio, but it's cold out, and I've been busy at work so that's what gives, instead of lifting.
